A Churchill is a long, generous cigar named after Winston Churchill. In Cuba the classic size is the Julieta No. 2: 178 mm long with a 47 ring gauge.
The man and the name
Churchill’s fondness for Havana cigars is well documented in photographs, and the format bearing his name is most closely associated with Romeo y Julieta — see Romeo y Julieta: History of the Marque. Other marques make the same factory size under their own names.
Smoking a Churchill
A Churchill takes considerably longer to smoke than a Robusto, making it a cigar for an unhurried occasion. The length gives the blend time to develop, which is part of its appeal.
The Short Churchill
Some marques also offer a Short Churchill. In Romeo y Julieta’s case this is made in the Robusto factory size (124 mm × 50), so despite the name it is quite a different cigar.
