Romeo y Julieta is one of the best-known Havana marques, and its name — taken from Shakespeare’s tragedy — has helped make it one of the most recognisable.
Founding and early growth
The marque is dated to 1875 and attributed to Inocencio Álvarez and Manín García. Its wider fame is usually credited to José “Pepe” Rodríguez Fernández, who acquired the business in the early twentieth century and promoted it energetically, including through personalised bands for notable customers.
The Churchill connection
Winston Churchill is closely associated with Havana cigars, and Romeo y Julieta is the marque most often linked with him. The large size now called a Churchill takes its name from him; read more in What Is a Churchill Cigar?.
A broad range
Romeo y Julieta has historically offered a very wide range of sizes, from small cigars to large formats, including the Short Churchill made in the Robusto factory size. That makes it a useful marque for comparing vitolas; see Understanding Cigar Vitolas.
